Cradle of Humankind

The Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a network of 12 caves at Sterkfontein in which fossil remains of early hominid species have been found which give insight into the evolution of humans. A skull of Australopithecus Africanus called Mrs Ples was discovered here in 1947. It is the largest archaeological site in the world which has been continuously operating. The museum has several displays around the archaeological discoveries which have been made.

The Maropeng Visitor Centre which has interactive exhibits which take visitors through 4 billion years of history and gives insight into the importance of the archaeological finds in the region.
