These surreal salt pans are the largest in the world and are all that remains of an ancient superlake that evaporated over two millennia ago. The pans are interspersed with sand dunes, islands of rock, grassy plains and patches of Kalahari desert. At the driest time of year, when space seems truly endless and the terrain lunarlike, it is hard to believe that this is where you’ll find one of Africa’s largest populations of zebra. The rains fill the seasonal pans with shallow water, attracting migratory zebras in their thousands, as well as wildebeest and springbok. Inevitably, big cats follow closely. The rain-filled pans form the world’s biggest breeding site of greater flamingos and also host other waterbirds, such as pelicans, spoonbills, waders and storks.
