Khama Rhino Sanctuary
Book or inquire nowThe Khama Rhino Sanctuary is not often visited by international tourists doing safaris in Botswana. It is often a delightful stopover for tourists travelling by road to Botswana’s northern reserves. This reserve has a unique history as it is a community tourism project which was proposed by the local community in conjunction with Sertse Ian Khama in 1989. The local community realised how rhinos were being decimated by poaching and gave their land to be turned into a sanctuary.
Today the 46-kilometre Sanctuary is home to 35 white rhinos and 4 black rhinos. The reserve is managed and staffed by locals, and it is one of only two places in Botswana where visitors can see rhinos. Visitors can enjoy game drives in the park to see the rhino. The sanctuary is also home to wildebeest, impalas, ostriches, brown hyenas, leopards and more than 230 bird species.
