Lake Manyara National Park

Visiting Lake Manyara National Park is the perfect introduction to a safari in Tanzania. The writer Ernest Hemingway called Lake Manyara “the loveliest lake in Africa. ”A vast shallow soda lake covers most of the 330km park. Most of the wildlife gathers along the shores.

One of the main attractions is the chance to see Lake Manyara’s tree-climbing lions – seeing a whole pride of lions relaxing in the branches of an acacia tree is a remarkable sight. The park is also known for its large troops of baboons which delight visitors. The edge of the lake is turned pink as large flocks of flamingos gather on the soda lake to feed on shrimp – perfect for wonderful photographic opportunities during your African safari. Over 400 species have been recorded in the park making it a good introduction to the birds found in East Africa.

The park has several habitats, and visitors are often thrilled by the baboon troops often found in the Euphorbia forest. The park is one of the few places in East Africa where you can see tree-climbing Lions. The park’s varied landscape supports an impressive range of other game, including elephant, wildebeest, buffalo, hippo, flamingo, zebra, warthog, waterbuck, giraffe, dik-dik and impala. Lake Manyara is also known for its excellent birding with over 400 species recorded. It is known for its sightings of raptors..
