Moremi Game Reserve

Book or inquire now

The Moremi Game Reserve has been voted among the best wildlife destinations in Africa on numerous occasions. The reserve covers much of the eastern and central region of the Okavango Delta. It is the oldest protected area of the Okavango, which has created one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems in Africa.

Moremi was declared in 1963 by the wife of the late Chief Moremi III. The local Batawana people realised how the wildlife of the Okavango was being depleted by hunting activity and decided to form a reserve with the help of conservationists. Today, the reserve teems with life, offering some of the best wildlife sightings especially of predators including Lions, Hyenas and Leopards. Both Black and White Rhinos have been re-introduced to the reserve, and it is one of the few places in Botswana where visitors can see the Big Five.

The Kwhai region forms part of Moremi and this region of floodplains and Mopani woodland is one of the most beautiful regions of the delta. Many photographers consider the landscape creates beautiful natural lighting for taking wildlife photographs. Visitors can enjoy game drives in search of large herds of buffalo or when in flood season take tranquil canoe trips in Makoros. Thrilling walking safaris in Big Five country are also popular.

Access: How to get to Moremi Game Reserve

Most visitors will fly into one of the camps by charter plane. Parts of the northeast of the reserve can be accessed by road, but a 4×4 vehicle is needed and parts become unpassable during the wet season from December to March.
