Overview

Grootberg Lodge sits high on a plateau in Damaraland, looking out over the Klip River Valley in Namibia’s ≠Khoadi-//Hôas Conservancy. It is one of the few lodges in the area built and run by the local community, so guests feel closely connected to the people and land around them.

Getting to the lodge is part of the experience. The trip starts at the bottom of the plateau, where the road gets narrower and the views open up. Guests who feel comfortable driving a 4×4 can drive themselves up. Others are guided along the winding track to the top, a slow climb that helps set the calm mood for the stay. By the time guests reach the top, they can already feel the pace of life slowing down.

On arrival, guests get a warm welcome in true Damara style. Staff dressed in colourful headscarves offer cool cloths and refreshing drinks, and greet guests with a traditional song. It is a warm and memorable way to start the stay. From that first moment, there is no need to rush. Guests can simply settle in and take in their new surroundings.

Every part of the lodge is designed to make the most of the views. Large windows in the dining room and lounge, a big outdoor deck, and an infinity pool all look out over the valley below. Many guests end up just sitting quietly, watching how the light changes across the valley through the day.

The land around the lodge changes with the seasons. Between January and March, rain falls and slowly changes the dry plains. Riverbeds fill with water, grass grows back, and wild lilies appear across the fields. For the rest of the year, the area stays dry, home to wildlife that has learned to survive with very little water. Because of this, no two visits to Grootberg feel exactly the same.

Guided activities are one of the best parts of a stay here. Guests can track endangered black rhino on foot with experienced guides, learning how to read footprints and other signs in the ground. Elephants that are used to the dry climate also roam freely nearby, and while sightings are never certain, spotting one is often a real highlight of the trip. These walks also teach guests a lot about how animals survive in such a tough environment.

Other animals often seen in the area include zebra, kudu, and springbok on the open plains, along with klipspringer moving across the rocky slopes. Some animals are harder to spot, like aardwolf, civet, and wildcat, while the odd leopard or lion sighting is a reminder of just how wild this part of Damaraland still is. Birdwatchers can also look out for Verreaux’s eagles, pale winged starlings, and bare cheeked babblers.

In the afternoons, guests often join guided nature drives or walks across the plateau. Guides share what they know about the local wildlife, birds, and tough desert plants that survive here. Evenings are simple and relaxed, with good food, wide open skies, and plenty of stars once night falls. With so little to distract from the quiet surroundings, sleep usually comes easily.

Beyond the wildlife, a stay at Grootberg also offers a chance to connect with local people. Visits to the nearby conservancy let guests meet residents, hear their stories, and better understand what life is like in one of Namibia’s most remote areas. These visits often stay with guests long after they leave, adding real meaning to the trip.
