Mount Nelson

Cape Town's storied pink lady beneath Table Mountain, where 125 years of history meet nine acres of gardens and the city's most celebrated Afternoon Tea

Overview

Mount Nelson sits at the foot of Table Mountain, just minutes from the centre of Cape Town, yet its nine acres of gardens give it a sense of space and seclusion that feels far removed from the city around it. Known affectionately as “The Nellie,” the hotel has been part of Cape Town’s social and cultural life for more than a century, combining grand heritage with a distinctly South African sense of place.

The story began in 1843, when Sir Hamilton Ross established a family homestead on the property, laying the foundations for the gardens that remain one of Mount Nelson’s defining features. The hotel itself opened in 1899 and quickly became one of Cape Town’s most celebrated addresses. Its now unmistakable pink exterior was introduced in 1918 to mark the end of the First World War. More than a century later, the same distinctive colour remains, giving the hotel an identity that is instantly recognisable across the city.

Over the decades, Mount Nelson has attracted an unusually diverse collection of guests, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, John Lennon, Marlene Dietrich and the Dalai Lama. That history has helped shape the character of the hotel, where old-world elegance is balanced by an atmosphere that remains sociable and welcoming. Guests arrive for the heritage, but stay for the gardens, service, dining and the sense of occasion that has long been part of life at The Nellie.

Accommodation comprises 110 rooms and 86 suites, ranging from intimate rooms to expansive suites of up to 377 square metres that can accommodate larger families and groups. Among the property’s more distinctive accommodations are the Thebe Magugu Suite and Magugu House, created in collaboration with acclaimed South African designer Thebe Magugu. The spaces bring contemporary South African fashion, art and design directly into the guest experience, creating a thoughtful connection between the hotel’s heritage and the country’s creative present.

Dining is a significant part of the Mount Nelson experience, with seven distinct venues spread across the property. Afternoon Tea in the historic Lounge remains one of Cape Town’s enduring rituals, attracting both hotel guests and local residents. Amura offers an immersive marine-inspired dining experience from acclaimed chef Ángel León, while The Red Room by Chefs Warehouse brings Pan-Asian flavours to the property. The Verandah focuses on seasonal South African cuisine, while Oasis takes a farm-to-table approach. The Fountain and Planet Bar complete the offering with relaxed outdoor dining and cocktails.

The gardens provide a natural extension of the hotel’s interiors, with lawns, mature trees and mountain views creating a peaceful setting in the heart of Cape Town. Guests can make use of two outdoor pools, Librisa Spa, tennis courts and a dedicated Kids’ Club, making the property equally suited to couples, families and multi-generational stays. Complimentary shared transfers to the V&A Waterfront make exploring the city straightforward, while the hotel’s location also places Cape Town’s beaches, attractions and surrounding wine country within easy reach.

Mount Nelson’s six event spaces can accommodate celebrations of up to 400 guests, with the gardens and Table Mountain providing a spectacular backdrop for weddings, proposals and other special occasions. The property is equally well suited to honeymoons and private escapes, offering the rare combination of a central city location and a genuinely tranquil setting.

Recognised among the world’s leading hotels, Mount Nelson continues to stand apart through a sense of identity that has been carefully preserved rather than repeatedly reinvented. Its history, gardens, distinctive pink façade and enduring place in Cape Town life make The Nellie more than a luxury hotel: it is one of the city’s great landmarks.
