Overview

In the Okavango, the roads are made of water. Channels curl between reed beds, lilies open on still lagoons, and the loudest sound at dawn may be a hippo clearing its throat somewhere out of sight.

Xugana Island Lodge sits on the edge of Xugana Lagoon, in the heart of the Okavango Delta, the jewel of the Kalahari. It is a setting that makes a fine argument for travelling more slowly. Surrounded by water, the lodge is built on an island. Its raised thatch chalets are set along the shaded fringe, facing the lagoon.

In the afternoon, the light draws you back onto the water, and at dusk the frogs and night birds begin their chorus.

The Delta’s permanent channels mean water safaris are possible all year round. Glide through the reeds in a mokoro, the traditional dugout canoe, with only the pole and the ripples for company.

Take a boat through the lagoons to find hippo and crocodile, or step onto the islands for a wilderness walk and read the tracks left by passing animals. With a guide beside you, even a short outing becomes a lesson in how the Delta works. Sitatunga and lechwe, antelope suited to the wetlands, may appear alongside other big game that frequents the islands and riverine fringes.

Birdwatchers will find the birdlife outstanding, with kingfishers darting over the water and fish eagles calling from the treetops. The lagoons and papyrus fringes are alive with wings from dawn until dusk. Anglers can cast for bream and tiger fish, with the fishing at its best at certain times of the year.

Night safaris, game drives and helicopter flights add different ways to read the landscape, and conservation runs through the whole experience. Xugana rewards travellers who like their adventure quiet and unhurried. Photographers will relish the low, close-to-the-water perspective, birders and anglers will find plenty to keep them busy, and couples will find a lagoon-facing deck hard to leave.
