Tuli Block is one of southern Africa’s best-kept secrets. Often called “the land of giants,” – everything seems bigger there from the rugged peaks of the kopjes to the giant baobab trees. It is a photographer’s and geologist’s dream.

The Tuli Block was several cattle and wildlife ranches in southern Botswana along the border with South Africa which have been turned into private game reserves and conservation areas. Tuli boasts the largest herds of Elephants on privately owned land in Africa.

Tuli is also fascinating from a historical perspective. Tourists can see the remains from Iron and Stone Ages, as well as see connections with the nearby Mapungubwe World Heritage Site in South Africa. Visitors can set out on game drives in search of wildlife including predators like Leopard and Cheetahs and increasingly excellent Lion sightings. Many lodges have bunkers and hides at waterholes which make this an exceptional destination for photographic safaris.

As they are all private game reserves, visitors have freedom on their safari to enjoy a wide range of activities which allow them to get close to nature. Examples include bush walks, cycling or horseback safari. Sleeping out in makeshift fly camps under the stars give a real sense of connection with Africa. The reserve is also famous for its annual fundraising cycle tour through the reserve called the Tour de Tuli.

Access: How to get to Tuli Block

For overseas guests, Johannesburg is the best port of entry. The quickest and easiest way to get to Tuli is to fly to the Limpopo Valley Airfield or by charter flight into one of the lodge airstrips. For residents or for those who are happy to self-drive, the border at Pont Drift is about a five-hour drive from Johannesburg on good quality roads. When the Limpopo River is flowing, the border crossing is conducted by cable car, which is quite an adventure in itself!
