Inhambane is a coastal town in southern Mozambique, about 469km from Maputo. It is the main starting point for visitors travelling to the nearby beaches of Tofo and Barra. The town is also popular with self-drive travellers and fishing enthusiasts from South Africa.

Inhambane is one of Mozambique’s oldest towns. It began as a Persian trading centre in the 11th century and later became an important port visited by Arab, Persian, and Portuguese traders. Over the years, it grew into a centre for the ivory and slave trade. Today, the town still reflects its rich history through its Portuguese-style buildings, busy harbour, local markets, and waterfront. Visitors can relax by the bay and watch traditional wooden dhows sail between Inhambane and Maxixe.

The town is the perfect base for exploring Mozambique’s famous coastline. The dry season, from April to October, brings cooler weather and is the best time to visit.

Just a short drive away, Tofo Beach is one of the country’s top diving and snorkelling destinations. Several PADI dive centres offer courses and equipment for beginners and experienced divers. Whale sharks and manta rays are commonly seen between September and February, while humpback whales migrate through the area from June to November. The waters are also popular for deep-sea fishing.

Further north, the Barra Peninsula is known for its long white sandy beaches, warm Indian Ocean waters, and peaceful atmosphere. It is a popular destination for honeymooners and couples looking for a relaxing beach escape.

Inhambane is also a great base for exploring more of southern Mozambique. Travellers can drive north to Pomene Bay, known for its sand dunes and mangrove forests, or head inland to Banhine and Limpopo National Parks to see wildlife, including the Big Five. Visitors can also experience the local Bitonga culture, as the Bitonga language is spoken only in the Inhambane region.
