Most journeys begin in Vilanculos, a relaxed coastal town and gateway to the islands offshore. It has a lively market, traditional dhow-building beaches and excellent seafood restaurants. Further south, Inhambane offers a laid-back mix of colonial streets, wide sandy beaches, beachfront bars and famous Mozambican peri-peri chicken.
A short boat ride from Vilanculos takes you to the Bazaruto Archipelago, where clear turquoise waters and sandy beaches are perfect for kayaking, horse riding, snorkelling or simply relaxing. Further north, Quirimbas National Park is home to beautiful coral islands, mangroves and palm-fringed shores. Both offer peaceful island escapes away from the crowds of more popular Indian Ocean destinations.
Mozambique’s warm waters are a major draw, with excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving alongside manta rays, whale sharks and seasonal humpback whales. The country is also known for world-class deep-sea fishing, including tuna, wahoo and black marlin.
Beyond the coast, Maputo offers Portuguese architecture, lively markets and a growing restaurant scene. Inland, Gorongosa National Park has made a remarkable recovery and now supports thriving populations of elephant, lion and antelope. Walking safaris and canopy walks offer a more intimate way to experience this remarkable wilderness.
