Visitors can choose from a wide range of hotels, beach lodges, guesthouses, and self-catering accommodation.
Vilanculos has a relaxed coastal atmosphere and stretches along a beautiful sandy shoreline. Its calm bay is perfect for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and other water activities. Many travellers stay in town and join boat trips to the nearby islands, where they can enjoy quiet beaches, clear water, and excellent marine life.
The town itself is small and welcoming. Local markets sell fresh produce, seafood, and handmade crafts, while restaurants serve traditional Mozambican dishes, including the country’s famous prawns.
The waters around Vilanculos are among the best in Mozambique for diving and snorkelling. Colourful coral reefs attract manta rays, whale sharks, sea turtles, and many tropical fish. Humpback whales visit these waters between June and November during their annual migration. The nearby marine park also protects the rare dugong, one of the world’s most endangered marine mammals.
Fishing is another major attraction. The waters around Vilanculos are famous for Black Marlin from October to February. Visitors can also catch tuna and other game fish or enjoy saltwater fly fishing along the coastline.
If you want to explore beyond the coast, Zinave National Park is within driving distance for travellers with a 4×4 vehicle. The park forms part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area and offers a chance to see lions, leopards, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, and other wildlife in a remote natural setting.
