The writer Ernest Hemingway called Lake Manyara ‘the loveliest lake in Africa’. This vast shallow soda lake covers much of the 330 square kilometre park, and most of the parks wildlife gathers along its shores.
One of the main attractions is the chance to see Lake Manyara’s tree-climbing lion, seeing a whole pride relaxing in the branches of an acacia tree is a remarkable sight. The park is also known for its large troops of cheeky baboon which delight visitors with their antics. The edge of the soda lake is fringed with pink as large flocks of flamingo gather on shore to feed on shrimp, creating perfect photographic opportunities. Including the flamingo over 400 bird species have been recorded in the park.
The parks varied habitats are home to elephant, wildebeest, buffalo, hippo, flamingo, zebra, warthog, waterbuck, giraffe, dik dik and impala among many others.
