Murchison Falls National Park has good year-round birding, with January to March being the very best and migratory birds being present from November to April. Heavy rain in the wet seasons – particularly from April to May and August to October – can leave some roads impassable and make for slippery hiking trails. Take a boat trip on the Victoria Nile towards the Lake Albert delta to look for sightings of the prehistoric-looking endangered shoebill stork.

Bwindi Inpenetrable Forest is home to some 350 recorded bird species, including forest birds, migratory birds and 23 Albertine endemics. Bird watching is rewarding all year round, however the wet-season months of March to April and September mean plenty of food for birds and therefore excellent sightings.

Birdwatching at Lake Nakuru is always excellent, however the breeding season from November to April is when many birds are in full plumage. April can be very wet and, while good for birding, less productive for general wildlife viewing.

• Add a day-trip to Mabamba Swamp as you pass through Entebbe for an excellent chance to spot shoebills as well as up to 260 other species. This wetland is an important birding site – it is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. A guided boat trip through the winding papyrus-lined channels and lagoons is thoroughly rewarding.
• Add on a gorilla trek in Bwindi Inpenetrable Forest for a trip of a lifetime.
