Onguma Camp Kala
Four stilted suites above a prolific waterhole near Etosha, where hot tubs, outdoor day beds, and ultra luxury design put wildlife front and centre
Overview
At Camp Kala, the waterhole is more than a feature of the landscape; it is the centrepiece of the entire safari experience. Located within Onguma Nature Reserve, close to Etosha National Park’s eastern entrance, this exclusive retreat places guests above the natural comings and goings of Namibia’s wildlife. Elevated on wooden stilts, the camp’s four suites offer front-row views of animals visiting the water below. Its unusual architectural form, a tall, conical structure reminiscent of a giant termite mound, gives the property a striking presence in the surrounding bush. Designed by Nick Plewman Architects, with interiors by Fox Browne Creative, Camp Kala was featured on the Condé Nast Traveller Hot List in 2023.
The camp’s four suites combine generous proportions with thoughtful design and a strong connection to the outdoors. Each features an open-plan layout, king-size or twin beds, air conditioning and an evening breeze system that allows guests to enjoy the fresh air while sleeping with the doors open. Bathrooms are equally impressive, with double vanities, full-size bathtubs and showers positioned to overlook the waterhole. Outside, private decks feature wood-fired hot tubs and plunge pools, creating secluded spaces for relaxation with wildlife often visible below. A shaded sala furnished with a king-size daybed offers an alternative place to spend the afternoon or, for those who wish, sleep beneath the stars. Personal bars, tea and coffee stations, in-room safes and discreet butler service add to the comfort.
Much of the magic at Camp Kala comes from being able to watch wildlife without leaving the camp. The elevated lounge and cocktail bar provide comfortable places to settle in with a drink, while the open-plan dining area brings guests together for meals prepared in the adjoining chef’s kitchen. For photographers and wildlife enthusiasts, a ground-level photographic hide offers a different perspective, placing them close to the waterhole as animals arrive. The experience continues after sunset, when the deck’s fire pit becomes a natural gathering point. Guests can also enjoy treatments in the camp’s dedicated spa room, exercise in the gym or spend quiet time on the yoga deck.
For those keen to explore beyond the waterhole, Onguma Nature Reserve covers approximately 35,970 hectares of wilderness. Private game drives offer opportunities to encounter the reserve’s wildlife, while guided bush walks reveal the smaller details of the landscape, from tracks and plants to the intricacies of the ecosystem. Etosha National Park is also within easy reach via the Von Lindequist Gate, allowing guests to combine the private reserve experience with explorations of one of Namibia’s best-known wildlife areas. Further activities available across Onguma include the Onkolo Hide, dining in the bush and the Dream Cruiser Adventure Sleep Out, which offers a memorable way to spend a night surrounded by nature.
There is no need to fill every hour at Camp Kala. An early morning drive can give way to a leisurely breakfast, followed by an afternoon spent watching the waterhole from a private deck. Depending on the season and wildlife movements, elephants, antelope and other animals may provide the day’s entertainment without guests needing to venture far. As darkness settles over the reserve, dinner, a crackling fire and the sounds of the African bush create a different atmosphere. The camp’s small size allows the team to tailor the experience to individual preferences, with privacy and personal attention shaping each stay.
With a maximum capacity of eight adults, Camp Kala is well suited to couples, small groups of friends and guests seeking an exclusive safari escape. Suites can be reserved individually, or the entire camp can be booked for private use. Children under 12 are accepted only when the camp is reserved exclusively, making a sole-use booking an option for families seeking a more intimate setting. An all-inclusive arrangement, room service, Wi-Fi and a private airstrip on the property help make travel and daily arrangements straightforward.
Camp Kala offers a safari experience where the wildlife comes to you. Its combination of distinctive architecture, private outdoor spaces and exceptional waterhole viewing makes it particularly appealing to travellers who value both design and immersion in nature. With access to the wider Onguma reserve and Etosha National Park, it provides an opportunity to experience Namibia’s wildlife from an intimate and unusually comfortable vantage point.
