Before dawn, the Mara is already awake. A lion’s roar rolls across the plains, hooves drum somewhere beyond the river, and you lie in your tent listening, aware that one of the great wildlife spectacles on earth is unfolding just down the riverbank. This is Rekero Camp, a small, intimate base in the heart of the Masai Mara, tucked into the shade of the trees above the Talek River.

Accommodation is in nine classic, spacious safari tents, each with an ensuite bathroom. Canvas walls keep you close to the sounds of the bush, while the details keep you comfortable. Spend a lazy midday on the daybed on your private veranda and watch zebra amble along the riverbank, or simply close your eyes and let the Mara do the talking. With only nine tents, the camp feels more like a private hideaway than a lodge.

The main event is the annual wildebeest and zebra migration. Rekero Camp sits just 150 metres from a crossing point on the Talek River, and a short drive from the Mara River, so when the herds gather at the water’s edge you are already in position. Watching thousands of animals gather their courage for the plunge is a moment that stays with you long after you have left Kenya. When the herds move on, the predators remain.
