Savute Elephant Lodge

A remote Belmond lodge on the Savute Channel, where the world's largest concentration of wild elephants gathers at a watering hole just steps from camp

Overview

Savute Elephant Lodge sits in one of the most remote and compelling corners of Botswana, deep within Chobe National Park and overlooking the ever-changing Savute Channel. Part of Belmond’s collection of African properties, the lodge is defined as much by its extraordinary setting as by the wildlife that surrounds it. A permanent watering hole lies directly in front of camp, drawing large numbers of elephants and creating the remarkable possibility of watching wildlife from the comfort of the lodge, sometimes before the day’s first game drive has even begun.

The Savute Channel has a history as unpredictable as its name suggests. The area was once home to the San Bushmen, hunter-gatherers whose presence can still be traced through ancient rock paintings found in the surrounding hills. After the region became part of Botswana’s first national park in the 1960s, the channel gradually dried out and remained dormant for decades. Then, in 2008, water began flowing through it again, seemingly without warning or a clear explanation. The Setswana word “Savute” is often translated as “unpredictable,” an apt description of a landscape shaped by shifting water levels and changing wildlife patterns.

With just 12 tented rooms, the lodge maintains an intimate feel and allows the surrounding wilderness to remain the focus. Each room is raised on a bamboo platform, blending naturally into the landscape while offering a comfortable retreat after a day in the bush. Four-poster beds, well-appointed bathrooms and considered furnishings provide understated comfort without taking away from the sense of being immersed in nature. Stays are all-inclusive, covering meals and drinks as well as a minimum of two daily game-viewing activities. The lodge also has its own airstrip and helipad, making access straightforward, with flights taking approximately 50 minutes from Maun and 40 minutes from Kasane.

Wildlife viewing in Savute changes with the landscape, and the lodge’s experienced guides adapt each day according to seasonal conditions, water levels and animal movements. Elephants are the defining attraction, with the watering hole providing exceptional opportunities for close observation. The wider area is also home to lions, wild dogs, leopards and other predators, alongside a remarkable variety of birdlife that changes throughout the year. A dedicated lookout hide overlooking the water offers an alternative to traditional game drives, allowing guests to sit quietly and watch animals approach without the presence of a safari vehicle.

Game drives remain central to the experience, but time at Savute is not limited to wildlife viewing. Bush meals beneath an ancient baobab, sundowners in the wilderness and evenings around the campfire create space to slow down and absorb the character of the landscape. Between activities, guests can retreat to the heated swimming pool, enjoy treatments in the spa tent, browse the boutique or spend time in the reference library learning more about Botswana’s wildlife, history and natural environment.

Families are also well catered for, with dedicated children’s amenities and activities making the lodge suitable for both multi-generational journeys and couples seeking an intimate safari. Savute Elephant Lodge can also form part of a wider Botswana itinerary, particularly when paired with sister property Eagle Island Lodge. Together, the two offer a striking contrast between the dry, wildlife-rich landscapes of Savute and the waterways and islands of the Okavango Delta.

At its heart, Savute Elephant Lodge is a place defined by proximity and patience: an unpredictable channel, a wildlife-rich watering hole and the extraordinary experience of watching elephants move through the wilderness just beyond your tent.
