A vast Kalahari wilderness where solitude, silence and wildlife define the landscape

Stretching across more than 52,000 square kilometres, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is a vast wilderness of open grasslands, ancient river valleys, salt pans and endless horizons. Remote and beautifully untouched, its immense scale creates a profound sense of space and solitude.

Wildlife has adapted remarkably to the Kalahari’s harsh conditions. Springbok, gemsbok, eland and wildebeest move across the plains, while brown hyenas, cheetahs, leopards and the reserve’s famous black-maned lions roam the wilderness. Meerkats and bat-eared foxes add to the fascinating variety of smaller desert-adapted species.

The character of the reserve changes dramatically with the seasons. Summer rains transform the dry landscape into lush grasslands, drawing large concentrations of wildlife, while the dry months reveal the stark beauty of the Kalahari and offer exceptional opportunities to observe predators against the open plains.

Beyond its wildlife, the Central Kalahari is deeply connected to the San people, whose ancestral relationship with this land stretches back thousands of years. Their knowledge, traditions and intimate understanding of the Kalahari add another layer to a destination defined by its wildness, silence and extraordinary sense of place.
