Chizarira National Park is one of Zimbabwe’s largest protected areas and one of its best-kept secrets. Located in the north-west of the country, the park sits high above the Zambezi Valley and near Lake Kariba. It covers nearly 2,000km² of wild landscapes, including rocky hills, deep gorges, forests, and open plains. The name “Chizarira” comes from the local Tonga language and means “Great Barrier,” referring to the steep escarpment that surrounds the park.
The park is famous for its dramatic scenery and peaceful atmosphere. Hidden springs and streams bring life to the valleys, creating a rich habitat for wildlife. Because so few people visit, Chizarira offers a true wilderness experience where nature remains largely untouched.
Wildlife includes elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, greater kudu, impala, and klipspringers. Lucky visitors may also spot roan antelope, tsessebe, and spotted hyenas. Unlike many other safari destinations, Chizarira is best explored on foot with an experienced guide. Guided walks and wilderness camping allow visitors to experience the park’s natural beauty up close.
The park is easiest to reach by 4×4 vehicle, with Karoi acting as the main gateway. The dry season, from July to October, offers the best road conditions and wildlife viewing as animals gather around rivers and natural springs.
