Gonarezhou National Park

Gonarezhou National Park is one of Zimbabwe’s largest and most beautiful wildlife reserves. It lies in the remote south-east of the country, close to the border with Mozambique, and covers more than 5,000km² of untouched wilderness. The park is famous for its towering Chilojo Cliffs, wide river valleys, and large herds of elephants. Its name, Gonarezhou, means “The Place of Elephants” in the local Shangaan language.

As part of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, Gonarezhou connects with protected areas in Mozambique and South Africa, creating one of the largest conservation landscapes in Africa. This protected area allows wildlife to move freely across borders and plays an important role in conserving the region’s natural heritage.

The park supports a wide variety of wildlife. Along with thousands of elephants, visitors may see lions, leopards, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, wild dogs, and many species of antelope. Birdwatchers can also enjoy more than 450 recorded bird species. The Save, Runde, and Mwenezi rivers provide water throughout the year and attract animals from across the park.

Gonarezhou offers an authentic safari experience away from the crowds. Visitors can enjoy guided walks, game drives, birdwatching, fishing, and camping in one of Zimbabwe’s most remote national parks. The Gonarezhou Conservation Trust manages the park through a partnership between the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and the Frankfurt Zoological Society. Their work helps protect wildlife, supports local communities, and preserves this remarkable landscape for future generations.
