Matusadona National Park

Matusadona National Park is a hidden safari destination on the southern shores of Lake Kariba in northern Zimbabwe. Covering about 1,400km², the park combines open plains, woodlands, hills, and lakeshore scenery to create one of the country’s most beautiful wilderness areas. Because most visitors arrive by boat or small aircraft, the park remains peaceful and uncrowded throughout the year.

Known as the “Land of the Lion,” Matusadona is one of the best places in Zimbabwe to experience nature away from the crowds. The park is home to elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of antelope, including sable, roan, and waterbuck. Conservation work is helping wildlife populations recover, with plans to reintroduce black rhinos and cheetahs in the future.

Lake Kariba is at the heart of the Matusadona experience. Boat safaris offer excellent opportunities to watch wildlife along the shoreline while enjoying spectacular sunsets over the water. Visitors can also stay on a houseboat, giving them a unique way to explore the lake and observe animals from the water.

Game drives and guided walking safaris allow visitors to discover the park’s rich wildlife and beautiful landscapes. Birdwatchers can explore Sanyati Gorge, one of the park’s top birding areas, while anglers enjoy fishing on Lake Kariba. Canoeing and hiking are also popular activities for adventurous travellers.

The best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to October, when animals gather around the lake and wildlife is easier to spot. With its remote setting, beautiful scenery, and wide range of outdoor activities, Matusadona offers an authentic safari experience in one of Zimbabwe’s most peaceful national parks.
