Whale watching

Witness Southern Right whales breach and play along South Africa's dramatic Cape coastline. Learn where to go, when to visit, and what makes this migration so unforgettable.

Whale watching in South Africa offers the chance to see one of the world’s most impressive wildlife migrations. Every year, Southern Right whales leave the cold waters of Antarctica and travel to the warmer coast of the Western Cape. From June to November, they come close to shore to rest, play, mate, and raise their young.

Hermanus is South Africa’s best-known whale watching destination and is often considered one of the best places in the world to watch whales from land. The town has around 12 kilometres of coastal paths, where visitors can enjoy a long walk or a short stroll while looking out for whales. During whale season, a whale crier also walks along the coast and uses a kelp horn to let people know when whales have been spotted.

Southern Right whales are easy to recognise because of their size. They can grow to around 15 metres long and weigh up to 100 tonnes. Humpback and Bryde’s whales can also be seen in the area. Visitors may also spot dolphins, seals, sharks, and penguins, often known as South Africa’s Marine Big Five.

Why Go Whale Watching?

Whale watching along the South African coast offers a unique wildlife experience. Visitors can often see huge whales from land, sometimes just a short distance from the shore.

It is also easy to add to a wider South African trip. Whale watching works well alongside time in Cape Town, visits to the Cape Winelands, or a safari in the country’s wildlife reserves.

One of the best things about whale watching here is how accessible it is. There is no need for a long hike or early morning game drive. In many places, you can simply walk along the coast, stop at a lookout point, or relax while watching the ocean.

Things to Do During a Whale Watching Trip

Depending on the destination and season, a whale watching experience may include:

  • Watching whales from coastal paths and lookout points
  • Boat trips led by experienced marine guides
  • Helicopter flights for a view of whales from above
  • Local festivals celebrating the annual whale migration
  • Looking for dolphins, seals, seabirds, and other marine life

Plan Your Trip

The main whale watching season in South Africa runs from June to November, with September and October often offering some of the best opportunities to see whales.

Whale watching can be a memorable addition to a South African itinerary, whether you are spending time in Cape Town, exploring the Winelands, or combining the coast with a safari. It offers a different way to experience the country’s wildlife while enjoying its beautiful coastline and relaxed atmosphere.
