Enquire NowHwange National Park is the largest National Park in Zimbabwe and has the distinction of being home to some of the most diverse wildlife of any reserve in Africa. At 14,650 sq km, it is around the size of Belgium. The park was once the royal hunting ground of the Ndebele King Mzilikazi before being proclaimed as a National Park in 1929.
The park is home to around 50,000 Elephants, many of which have impressive tusks. Spotting large herds of elephants is common, especially in the dry season. Predators such as Lions, Cheetahs and Hyenas are also commonly seen. The park is also home to a population of the highly endangered African Wild Dog. It is home to large herds of buffalo and other plains game, including rarer species such as Sable and Roan antelope.
Access
Hwange is just a 1-hour drive from Victoria Falls, but the park is not crowded and the game viewing is generally excellent. In the dry winter months from June to November, the wildlife congregates around the man-made waterholes, creating fabulous game viewing from the hides. Hwange is also excellent for birders with over 400 species and many seasonal migratory birds.
Most visitors will fly into Victoria Falls International Airport to travel to Hwange National Park. The park is situated 195 km/121 mi from the Victoria Falls International Airport and the journey will take about 2 hours by road. Hwange lies 288 km/178 mi from the city of Bulawayo in Zimbabwe.
