Great Migration
Watch millions of wildebeest and zebra move across the Serengeti and Masai Mara in search of fresh grass and water. Experience one of Africa’s greatest wildlife spectacles from the ground or air.
The Great Migration is the annual movement of millions of wildebeest, zebra and other grazing animals across the plains of Tanzania and Kenya. Following the rains and fresh grass, the herds travel between the Serengeti and Masai Mara in one of the world’s most remarkable wildlife events.
Why add it to your safari?
There is something unforgettable about seeing thousands of animals moving across the plains at once. The herds also attract predators, creating exciting opportunities to see lions, cheetahs, crocodiles and other wildlife.
You can experience the migration in different ways, depending on your location and camp. Follow the herds on a game drive, watch from a hot air balloon, explore on foot or even ride alongside the plains on horseback. Some camps are positioned close to the migration route, allowing you to experience the movement of the herds without travelling far from camp.
Great Migration experiences vary by season and location, but can include:
- Game drives following the herds across the Serengeti and Masai Mara
- Hot air balloon safaris for a view of the migration from above
- Watching dramatic river crossings at the Mara River
- Walking safaris across the plains
- Horseback riding alongside wildlife
- Helicopter and light aircraft flights over the herds
Plan Your Great Migration Safari
The Great Migration follows the seasons, so choosing the right time and location is essential. The herds do not follow a fixed schedule, but Nziza can help plan your safari around their expected movements.
Whether you dream of watching a dramatic river crossing, following the herds on a game drive or seeing thousands of animals from above, we can build the Great Migration into your Kenya or Tanzania itinerary.
