Zanzibar
Enquire NowZanzibar is an archipelago of islands in the Indian Ocean, as well as the more familiar name of one of the larger islands, also known as Unguja. Around 35 km off the coast of Dar es Salaam, this archipelago consists of numerous other islands, including Pemba and Mafia.
The islands of Zanzibar, also known as the Spice Islands, were key trading ports during the spice race and consequently, have a rich history of cultural influences from Africa, India and Arabia. Zanzibar is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone Town, with its whitewashed, coral rag houses, quaint shops, bazaars, mosques and intimate winding streets.
Encircled by breathtaking white sand beaches, Zanzibar has the perfect combination of relaxation and exploration, whether you’re looking for a luxury retreat or a traditional family beach hotel. Browse the lively markets, snorkel pristine coral reefs, hop on a traditional dhow or simply enjoy the freshest seafood, ridiculous sunsets and tropical island life.
To glean an even greater understanding of the history, visit the 1883 House of Wonders. A landmark building with a clock tower, this was the former Sultan of Zanzibar’s palace, who had the main door made wide enough for him to ride an elephant through. Also visit the Old Fort, the island’s oldest building which now houses a cultural centre and stone amphitheatre.
Another point of interest are the underground aqueducts that fed hot water to the late-19th-century Hamamni Persian Baths. Although they are no longer operational it is possible to visit and marvel at the Persian architecture.
