Eastern Cape Game Reserves

The Eastern Cape Game Reserves are often overlooked by visitors who head for the more famous northern parks. However, the reserves of the East Cape offer exceptional Big Five game viewing in a malaria-free region which makes it popular with families with small children. This region is known as frontier country as it was settled by the Voortrekkers, Afrikaner farmers who pushed northwards due to the conflict with the English in colonial times.

One of the best-known reserves is Addo Elephant National Park, which as the name suggests is known for having one of the highest concentrations of Elephants in the World. The park has been extended to include a stretch of coastline where visitors can enjoy Whale watching and spotting Great White Sharks. Of the Big Five, the park is home to the endangered black-maned lions which are a rare treat to see.

There are also many private game reserves which have gained international reputations such as Shamwari Game Reserve, Amakhala Game Reserve Lalibela and Pumba Game Reserve. The game reserves are reached by flying into the city of Port Elizabeth and then getting a road transfer.

Access
The reserves of the Eastern Cape are best accessed by flying into Port Elizabeth Airport and then getting road transfer to the various reserves or hiring a car and self-driving.
