Chimpanzee trekking takes you into the forest to search for habituated chimpanzee groups that are comfortable around visitors. Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania are home to several groups that can be visited with trained guides and rangers.
At Nziza, we can arrange chimpanzee trekking at selected forest lodges, giving you the chance to explore the forest on foot and look for these intelligent and social primates.
Why Go Chimpanzee Trekking?
Chimpanzees are fascinating to watch in their natural environment. Once you find a troop, you may see them feeding, grooming, calling to one another and moving through the trees.
The trek itself is also part of the adventure. Forest trails can be steep, muddy and slippery, and the time spent walking depends on where the chimpanzees are on the day. The effort makes finding the troop even more rewarding.
Things to Expect on a Trek
Chimpanzee trekking experiences vary by location, but usually include:
- A briefing with guides and rangers before entering the forest
- A guided trek through forest trails in search of chimpanzees
- Time to observe the troop once it has been located
- Opportunities to photograph chimpanzees in the trees and on the forest floor
- The chance to see other forest wildlife and birdlife along the way
- The option to combine chimpanzee trekking with other forest experiences, including gorilla trekking in suitable locations
Where to Experience It
Chimpanzee trekking is available at selected Nziza partner properties in Uganda and Rwanda.
In Uganda, options include Turaco Treetops Lodge and Kyaninga Lodge near Kibale Forest National Park, as well as Buhoma Lodge and Kyambura Gorge Lodge near Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks. Mweya Safari Lodge also offers access to chimpanzee experiences in the region.
In Rwanda, chimpanzee trekking can be arranged as part of a stay at One&Only Nyungwe House in Nyungwe Forest.
