The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Africa’s first peace park, spans Botswana and South Africa as an unfenced reserve allowing free animal migration across the arid Kalahari. Known for its striking landscapes of fossil river valleys, grasslands, and coloured dunes, it’s a haven for photographers and 4×4 self-drivers. Despite the dry conditions, wildlife thrives around waterholes and pans, with famed black-maned lions, brown hyena, and plains game like springbok, gemsbok, and eland.

The Kgalagadi has the distinction of being the first trans-frontier peace park in Africa between Botswana and South Africa. This immense park is shared by the two countries ans is un-fended allowing animals to migrate freely through the arid regions of the Kalahari. Immigration and customs facilities have been designed to allow travellers to enter the park in one country and depart in the other.

Many visitors self-drive through the Kgalagadi in 4*4 vehicles needed for the rough sandy roads. One of the main attractions is the landscape which has fossil river vallleys and grasslands interspersed with dunes of different hues. This spectacular scenery makes it popular with photographers.

Considering the dry enviroment, the park is home to abundant wildlife which teems around the waterholes. Visitors come in search of the Kalahari’s famed black-maned Lions, Brown Hyena, Bat-eared Fox, Silver backed Cape Fox and the Aardwolf can all be seen. Plain gamaes like Springbok, Gemsbok and Eland are plentiful. Three large pans attract lots of game and provide a focus around which many campsites are situated.
