Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Located in the far south-west of Uganda, this beautiful park sits at an altitude of 2,227 to 4,127 metres where Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo meet. It forms part of the Virunga Conservation Area, a protected region that covers the famous Virunga Mountains and some of Africa’s richest wildlife habitats.

The park is dominated by three extinct volcanoes: Mount Muhabura (4,127m), Mount Gahinga (3,474m), and Mount Sabyinyo (3,645m). Their forested slopes, bamboo forests, swamps, and montane woodlands create a rich habitat for wildlife and provide spectacular scenery. Hiking these volcanoes is one of the park’s biggest attractions, especially Mount Sabyinyo, where visitors can stand at the point where Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo meet.

The park is best known for protecting endangered mountain gorillas and the rare golden monkey. The Nyakagezi Gorilla Family is the park’s only habituated gorilla group and is often easier to track because it stays within a smaller home range than many gorilla families in the region. Visitors can also track playful golden monkeys through the bamboo forest for another unforgettable wildlife experience.

The park is also an excellent destination for birdwatching. More than 180 bird species have been recorded here, including the colourful Rwenzori turaco and several rare birds found only in the Albertine Rift. Guided walks through the bamboo forests and mountain trails offer the best birding opportunities.

Mgahinga also has a rich cultural history. The Batwa people, the original inhabitants of these forests, lived here for generations before the park was established in 1991. Today, the Batwa Trail gives visitors the opportunity to learn about their traditional way of life, survival skills, hunting techniques, music, and culture.

Although it is Uganda’s smallest national park, it offers an unforgettable mix of gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, volcano hiking, birdwatching, and cultural experiences, making it one of the country’s most rewarding destinations.
