Enquire Now

Home to 35 white rhinos and four black rhinos, the Khama Rhino Sanctuary was established in 1989 after the local community set aside land to protect these endangered animals from poaching. Managed by the community, it is one of only two places in Botswana where visitors can see rhinos roaming freely in their natural habitat. The sanctuary is also home to leopards, zebras, giraffes, numerous antelope species, and more than 230 bird species. Located just 25 kilometres from Serowe, it is a popular stopover for travellers exploring northern Botswana.

The sanctuary is not often visited by international tourists. It is often a delightful stopover for tourists travelling by road to Botswana’s northern reserves. This reserve has a unique history as it is a community tourism project which was proposed by the local community in conjuction with Sertse Ian Khama in 1989. The local community realised how rhinos were being decimated by poaching and gave their land to be turned into a sanctuary.

Today the 46-kilometer Sanctuary is homee to 35 white rhinos and 4 black rhinos. The reserve is managed and staffed by locals, and it is one of the only two places in Botseana where visitors can see rhinos.Visitors can enjoy gamae drives in the park to see the rhinos. The sanctuary is also home to wildebeest, impalas, ostriches, brown heyan, leopards and more than 230 bird species.
