The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest and most unusual places on Earth. This remote region is known for its colourful landscapes, active volcanoes, and amazing natural features. It was formed where three tectonic plates meet, creating volcanoes, hot springs, salt flats, and colourful mineral deposits.

One of the most popular places to visit is Dallol. It is famous for its bright yellow, green, and orange hot springs and mineral pools. Nearby, visitors can see the Afar people cut and carry large blocks of salt, a tradition that has been part of their way of life for many generations.

Another highlight is Erta Ale, one of the world’s few volcanoes with a permanent lava lake. Visitors usually hike to the summit at night when the weather is cooler. The walk takes about three to four hours and rewards travellers with the incredible sight of glowing lava.

Visitors can also explore Lake Afera, a large salt lake where the water is much saltier than the sea. Nearby natural springs allow visitors to float easily in the mineral-rich water.

The Danakil Depression is a remote destination with no hotels, electricity, running water, or toilet facilities. Visitors join guided tours with local operators, who provide transport, camping equipment, meals, and experienced guides for a safe and memorable adventure.
